Outdoor Fall Photos: What to Wear

Planning a fall family photo shoot ? You’ve got the perfect golden-hour light, a gorgeous outdoor backdrop (think open fields, large oak trees, or grassy hills), and… wait, what do we wear?!

Don’t stress—dressing for a Southern California photo session should be fun, not a chore. Here’s how to look coordinated (but not too matchy), stylish (but still comfy), and totally you.

1. Embrace What You Love

The location for the images in this post is one of my favorites. It’s where I took my own family for our family sessions. The fall colors are beautiful here. I love the greens, browns, and dark burgundy colors in the brush. I love how this family chose light, neutrals that pop against the background. Instead of looking matchy-matchy, they have a harmonious mix of colors that go well together. Choose colors you love, and that look good on you. Pinterest has thousands of posts with great inspiration for color palettes that go well together. Here are some more ideas:

  • Classic Fall: Mustard, burgundy, olive, and cream

  • Moody & Rich: Deep plum, charcoal, rust, and navy

  • Soft & Neutral: Camel, blush, taupe, and oatmeal

  • Simply pick 3-4 colors and mix them across outfits—like a burgundy sweater on Dad, a cream dress for Mom, and plaid touches on the kids.

Skip: Neon colors or all-black (it can look flat in photos).

2. Layer for Dimension (and Practicality!)

Layers add texture, depth, and warmth Try:

  • Cozy knits (light sweaters, cardigans you can take off or put on if it’s too hot)

  • Stylish jackets or Vests (quilted or chunky knit for extra charm)

  • Layers let you switch up looks quickly—zip off a jacket for a different vibe!

  • Fall in Southern California is not like fall anywhere else. Remember it’s usually HOT.

4. Shoes Matter (Yes, Really!)

You will be walking on dirt, and possibly prickly brush, you’ll want to choose wisely.

  • Boots, boots, boots! (ankle boots, riding boots, or lace-up styles)

  • Loafers, oxfords, or nice athletic shoes (for a preppy or stylish look)

  • Comfy booties (for easier mobility)

Skip: Flip-flops or brightly colored sneakers with large logos (unless it’s part of a very casual vibe).

5. Accessorize (But Keep It Simple)

A few well-chosen extras add personality without overwhelming:

  • Hats (if it matches your style)

  • Delicate jewelry (stacked bracelets, dainty necklaces)

  • A fun blanket or throw for sitting shots

6. Keep Kids Comfy (Or Risk Meltdowns)

If the little ones are fussing over scratchy sweaters or tight shoes, it’ll show. Opt for:

  • Soft, stretchy fabrics (no itchy wool or stiff outfits)

  • Layers they can remove if they get warm

  • Shoes they can run in (because candid play shots are the best)

8. Avoid These Photo Fails

  • Too many patterns (stick to one statement piece)

  • Logos/graphics (distracting!)

  • Wrinkled fabrics (steam or iron beforehand)

9. Pack a "Photo Ready" Bag

  • Tissues or wipes

  • Hairbrush & extra hair ties

  • A neutral-colored blanket for sitting poses

10. Choose What YOU Love and Feel Comfortable In!

  • You’ll be looking at these images for years, so choose ones you love.

  • If you feel comfortable, you’ll look more comfortable.

  • Try on your outfits the day before. See what they look like on you standing, sitting, crouching, and walking.

  • Lay everyone’s outfits out on the bed to make sure they all go well together. Do this well in advance so you have time to change anything you need to.

The best family photos capture your real connection—not just your outfits. So dress in something that feels like you, relax, and let those genuine smiles shine.
