How to Prepare for a Newborn Session

You've admired stunning newborn photos online, eagerly awaiting the moment when your own baby will be in those images. However, after your little one arrives, exhaustion sets in, and the thought of preparing for a photographer feels overwhelming. Relax! My goal is to alleviate that stress and ensure your session is a soothing experience. Here are my top tips for prepping for a newborn photography session.

  1. Don't clean your house

I understand you might want to tidy up before I visit, but it doesn't matter to me. I have four kids and know how busy those first weeks can be. You're likely tired and feeling overwhelmed. Instead of cleaning, please use that time to relax.

  2. Keep your baby comfortable

Newborn sessions work best when the baby is well-fed and asleep. To ensure this, keep your baby awake for about an hour before I arrive and then feed them just before or as I get there. Please avoid keeping the baby awake for too long, as it can lead to an overtired and stressed baby and parents.

  3. Dress for simplicity

Choose neutral, soft colors for family photos with your baby. Avoid bright patterns and colors to keep the focus on the baby. If you have a special outfit, blanket, or prop, please have it ready and inform me in advance so I can include it in the session.

  4. Have the essentials out and ready

Have bottles (if applicable), diapers, wipes, and burp cloths ready to go. We will most likely have one or two diaper and feeding changes during our session.

  5. Relax and trust me

It's normal to feel nervous about your baby cooperating, but you don't need to worry. Babies can pick up on your stress, which can make them fussy. I've worked with hundreds of newborns and know how to calm them so I can photograph them safely. Just relax and enjoy some down time while I take care of everything.

Once you book your session, I will send you a comprehensive guide detailing what to expect during your newborn session. This guide will include helpful information on what to wear, how to include siblings, and tips on what to avoid to ensure the best experience. Being well-informed will help you feel prepared and contribute to a smooth session. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have; I am here to help you every step of the way.
